War Child invites
Australians to 'Bake for War Child' as part of a fundraising
campaign to raise money for children affected by war.
Author Nick Earls, War Child Australia Chair, encourages people
from all over the country to host a fundraising bake-off to
raise money for War Child.
"A 'Bake for War Child' event can be held anywhere, anytime.
At work, school, your local community organization or at home
with friends - either bring along something baked for sharing,
or encourage everyone to bring a baked item for morning tea
and a donation for War Child," suggests Nick. "Whether
you've bought it or baked it at home, we want this to be a way
of spreading the word about War Child and the work we do, as
well as a chance to raise funds."
By participating in a Bake for War Child event you can help
raise money to provide much needed assistance to children in
war zones through War Child's humanitarian projects.
Bakeries have been a big part of the way War Child operates
for some time, with mobile bakeries having been deployed in
the Balkans in the 1990s, and the War Child bakery in Afghanistan
baking more than five million loaves of bread during the emergency
phase of operations there in 2002.
Now, War Child is putting together plans to take a mobile bakery
into Iraq, and an assesmment team is currently at work. War
Child aims to deploy the bakery if a location can be found where
the need is clear and security can be ensured. This bakery would
have the capacity to feed more than 50,000 displaced people.
War Child is a not-for-profit organisation founded in 1993 in
response to the plight of children caught in the war in former
Yugoslavia. War Child provides immediate, effective and practical
aid to children of all ages and ethnic backgrounds affected
by war. War Child Australia is the Australian Chapter of War
Child and was registered in July 2002. It is staffed entirely
by volunteers.
Anyone interested in participating in Bake for War Child should
contact their War Child state coordinator.
