Celebrities and artists turn childhood dreams to art for children of war

28 June 2006

Ever wondered about the childhood dreams of Cate Blanchett, Missy Higgins, Cathy Freeman, Pia Miranda, Steve Irwin, Tara Moss,Nick Earls, Rebecca Sparrow, Sean Leahy and other superstars or artists?

Thanks to an ambitious charity auction event the Brisbane Advertising and Design Club (BAD) and War Child Australia, more than 20 international and national superstar celebrities and artists have turned their childhood dreams to art to raise money for children of war.

The event, titled A Midwinter Night’s Dream, will be a high glamour ticketed charity auction - where each pillowcase work of art goes under the hammer – to be held on Wednesday, 26 July at the Tivoli in Fortitude Valley.

Both organisations have used their skills, contacts and know-how to attract an impressive line-up of very famous celebrities and artists.

In response to the childhood dreams theme, the celebrities and artists have used diverse approaches including writing, designing, doodling, filling, stitching or painting each pillowcase as if it were a blank canvas.

Brisbane Advertising and Design Club’s Sandra Hind says the response from celebrities and artists has been overwhelming.

“We asked a whole bunch of celebrities to donate their time and artistic talents to paint or decorate a pillowcase with some aspect of their childhood dreams, and the designs we have received back have been fantastic,” Sandra said.

“The experience of gathering such high calibre celebrities has been phenomenal.

“Former US President, Bill Clinton nearly came on board except a short lead time prevented him – however, he has personally commended the event and our work.

“This is also arguably the first (and possibly last time) works of art from such famous identities will be available for sale in Brisbane.”

Author Nick Earls, Ambassador of War Child Australia and pillowcase designer said the childhood dreams theme fitted with War Child’s mandate to help children who have been affected by war.

“This event proves that a little idea can turn into something really amazing and we look forward to being able to send all proceeds from the pillowcase artwork sales into field projects like Iraq, Afghanistan and the Democratic Republic of Congo.”

Celebrities and renowned artists who have designed pillowcases include:

Each pillowcase work of art will be professionally framed or creatively presented for sale at A Midwinter Night’s Dream.

All the proceeds from the auction will go to War Child Australia to provide immediate aid and sustainable programs to assist children affected by war in countries such as Iraq, Afghanistan and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The Brisbane Advertising and Design Club is a professional organisation helping to raise the profile of advertising and design agencies in Queensland.
