Nakururum School
War Child has been helping children in the Turkana district
which is a desert land situated in NW Kenya, bordering Sudan
and Uganda. These nomadic people usually graze their cattle
in all three localities but due to conflicts in both Uganda
and Sudan the geographical grazing area that they can use
has been drastically reduced. This coupled with a drought
in 1999 which killed approximately 75% of their herds left
the people looking for other employment opportunities and
therefore the need to receive a formal education. Most people
in the area, especially the Turkana, had never been to school
and as a result are now unemployed.
Education is therefore essential for children if they are
to have any hope of a sustainable future. War Child have supported
Nakururum School which caters for 312 children, of which 200
are street children from Lokichokio. The street children of
Lokichokio have little or no access to educational facilities.
At Nakururum School, War Child is funding the provision of
much-needed equipment, including desks, doors for each classroom,
and pit-latrines.

Good Hope Orphanage
War Child has also been supporting an orphanage in the
Kenyan capital Nairobi. The Good Hope Orphanage helps children
both in the slum areas and has a rural outreach programme
where children do not receive such direct assistance. Currently
the Good Hope Orphanage helps 160 orphaned children, 90%
of whom have lost their parents to HIV/AIDS.
30 children live at the home (Nairobi) most of whom are
very young and 136 are helped away from the home (Vihiga,
Kisumu and Kagonya district). These children live with relatives
in poor conditions and get regular help from Good Hope Orphanage.
18 children attend high school. Those who live outside the
main home are given a school uniform and funding to help
their upkeep.
War Child has provided school uniforms to 90 children. Many
children do not finish their education because they do not
own a uniform. Many are sent home from school if they have
no uniform and therefore miss their education. School fees
have been provided to allow 10 children to continue their
education at boarding school and reach their final examinations.
