War Child in the classroom

Reading challenges

If you're ready to read for a good cause, sign up for a War Child reading challenge. The idea is simple: you're seeking sponsorship to read books. Sponsorship may come from the SRC, families, or community groups.

Simply set the duration of the challenge – many schools find it easy to run a War Child reading challenge concurrently with the Premier's Reading Challenge in their state – arrange your sponsorship as a set amount or an amount per book, record each book read during that time, and foward the resulting funds to War Child.

This log will help you record your reading and fundraising.

Resources for teachers

Consider joining our schools mailing list. Several times a year you will receive an email update with details about War Child work around the world, suggestions about activities students can undertake to raise funds for War Child, and links to any new classroom resources. To join the schools mailing list, contact Natalie Martin nataliemartin@warchild.org.au.

You can obtain a copy of any of the materials listed here by emailing Natalie Martin. We would appreciate a donation to cover the costs of producing and mailing the materials. Donations can be directed to our PO box.

There is a DVD available of the War Child UK report I Am Not Trash: A Call to Action From Child Soldiers. The DVD provides insights into the lives of children formerly associated with the armed forces in the Democratic Republic of Congo, based on War Child UK's participatory action research in the northern DRC. This project was significantly funded by War Child Australia. You can download a PDF copy of the report (localised for Australian use) here.

There are limited numbers of War Child posters available. Contact your schools coordinator to request a set for classroom or library use.

War Child Australia has developed a PowerPoint presentation with details about its mission and work around the world. You can download a copy here (it's about 15MB), or contact your schools coordinator to request a copy on CD-ROM.

Canadian punk rock band Sum 41 visited the Democratic Republic of Congo with War Child Canada, and while they were there, made a documentatary, Rocked. If you're interested in bringing this experience to the classroom (these resources are suitable for secondary school students only):

  • War Child Canada has an educational version of the documentary (which has all the bad language beeped out) plus study guide available, for CND $20. Contact heather@warchild.ca to order your copy.

  • War Child Australia has a copy of an interview with Sum 41 about their experience in the DRC. It screened on Foxtel's Channel [v] in 2005, and is available free for educational use (thanks to XYZ Networks). Contact your schools coordinator to arrange to receive a copy.
